Five Misconceptions of Art

Misconceptions and myths are everywhere in the world of art and creativity. Don't believe them.

1. ART IS FOR PUBLIC CONSUMPTION

Wrong. Make art for arts sake. There is always a place for art. A place for your art. A place for art to empty the self, express the self. A place for art as healing. It has its place, it has its purpose. Whether for public consumption or not.

2. ART MUST BE VISUALLY PLEASING

Wrong. Art should feel good making it. Let go of the need to produce something that looks pretty. Instead embrace the process of creativity, of experimenting and happy accidents. Enjoy that freedom.

3. ART SHOULD CONVEY A MESSAGE

Wrong. All art is open to interpretation. I believe all art does convey a message, actually sometimes more than one. The message that the artist released into the work, intentionally or subconsciously and the message written and read by the viewer. Art is personal and multi-layered it does not HAVE to convey a message, it just does.

4. ART MUST BE MADE BY A RECOGNIZED ARTIST

Wrong. We are all artists.
artist
noun
noun: artist; plural noun: artists

a person who creates paintings or drawings as a profession or hobby.

synonyms: creator, originator, designer, producer, fine artist

5. ART IS A PRODUCT

Wrong. Art is a reflection of the artist. It is a process and an experience. An experiment and a journey. It speaks of the artist and their experiences, it is layer upon layer of paint and meaning. Art is a story of brushstrokes and not a product.
